We publish the following very complimentary notice from Typo : — The Feilding Star has just completed its seventh year. It is a " live " paper, ably written and often sparkling with genuine wit. — Long may it shine ! We learn from the Manawatu Times that a considerable amount of sympathy has been aroused on behalf of Mr WolJerman, in connection with the prohibition against the issue of a license for the house he is now erecting at considerable expense on the old Town Hall site. The remains were conveyed from deceased's late residence, the Empire Hotel, Feilding, to the cemetery at Sandon, the cortege being met at the latter township by friends and relatives of the family residing there. The Eev. Mr Cannell conducted the funeral rites. A serious charge against some of the deputy-assignees in bankruptcy was flatly brought by Mr Fitzherbert in the House. He declared that he knew of cases of lawyers who "tipped" deputy-as-signees with a commission before giyiug work to them. The Colonial Secretary objected to such insinuations, but Mr Fitzherbert returned to the charge, and said they were facts within his own knowledge. We notice that Master B. McCarthy was first in the recent senior scholarship examinations at Wanganui. We understand that Master McCarthy was six and a half years at the Manaia School under the Eev. G. Wilks, and left when the latter removed to Feilding, and for the last six months has only been attending the Hawera School under Mr Mair. This is certainly a feather in the cap of the Eev. Mr Wilks, and should greatly encourage the pupils under his tutorship to use thenutmost endeavors to emulate young McCarthy's in the honors he has gained. " Hermit hoar, in solemn cell "Wearing out life's evening gray, Strike thy bosom, sage, and tell What is bliss, and which the way. Thus I spoke, and speaking sigh'd Scarce repressed th9 starting tear, When the hoary sage replied, ' Come, my lad, and drink some beer.' " Few people will believe it, but it is a fact that these lines were written by the once famed Samuel Johnston. We have to acknowledge receipt of the first number of " Zealandia," a monthly magazine of New Zealand literature by New Zealand authors. This ambitious publication leads off with a Bondo in which the author remarks, " Our modest craft upon the wave, we blithely launch 'mid omens brave." We don't know what idea this may be intended to convey, but as there is a rhyme in it, most likely poetry is " what's the matter. He further says " Untried the ocean we explore," which means they have all shipped as " green hands" and we think so too. We haven't read any more, and have postponed adventuring through this publication until a future and more happy day, which we hope is far distant. The Payne Family of Musicians, who perform in Feilding on Thursday evening, won golden opinions from the Dunedin press when they were performing in that City. The Otago Daily Times writes : — Of the other part songs, the best were the slave melody " Steal away to Jesus" and the humorous compositions, which comprised very funny sneezing and sobbing songs. The " Three little Maids from school" tno, from " The Mikado," has never been sung so well in Dunedin as it was by Misses Lizzie, Nellie, and Maud Payne last night. Miss Lizzie's violin solo, " The Last Rose of Summer," was treated with a lightness that was rather astonishing. As a violin6t Miss Maud has ability, as an executant, wonderful for one so young. Wherever drollery was required, the facial expressions of Messrs Steele and W. J. Payne stood in good stead.
