“ANZAC—THE RISING ACCENT” Those Men whose bodies passed the other day— Do they not gather in their new array About this Day of Witness, as it stands Enshrining those whose graves appear in many Lands?
Do they review invisibly the People of this place Look on each one —with praise or disappointed face, Asking the Present —“What have the living done To rightly use the Freedom which for them we won?
Hear they the bitter words of Comrades who reply, “Pity the living who believed that tragic lie — For vandal powers have risen to rob
us' all Of that fair promise uttered by the Anzac Call.
We who from War return to show our hands and side, Pierced in the faith of Him —who Hate and Death defied Are oft put out, on scattered crumbs to feed Like him whom dogs licked at the gates of callous Greed.”
When They converse and tell once more their story As those who know its fullest shame
and glory — What look conies into those observant patient eyes Which constant keep the Watch and judge us from the Skies?
0 God! Do Anzac spirits show upon their faces The radiance of Reward in these redeemed places— Or do they know the deeper grief and needless pain Of those refused by us the Right they fought to gain?
To .Men whom we Revere —let now this pledge he given— Full Justice here on Earth —-not only hopes of Heaven— Lei Leaders heed Today (his Accent which is raised — Galling for Deeds above the wordy ritual or serifimontal praise.
