PUKEKOHE BOROUGH PROPOSALS

"From the replies received if is clear that a g-eal deal of thought lias been given to the proposals adopted by tiie council, and the resolution it passed, concerning the Dominion’s war effort. . . . Devonport Borough Council, Hamilton Borough Council, Lake County Council, Lower Hutt City Council, Newmarket Borough Council, Papatoetoe Town Board, Waitaki County Council, Wanganui City Council, Takapuna Borough Council, Rotorua Borough Council and Hikurangi Town Board all replied that the proposals had been “received.” Balaclutha Borough Council: That the letter lie on the table. Tcmuka Borough: “That the council appreciated the work involved in compiling the circular and the patriotic spirit behind it to assist the country’s war effort, but we believe that the Government, is in the best position to understand what is best for New Zealand.”

Tauranga Borough Council: To be considered at special meeting of council.

Otahuhu Borough Council asked for nine extra copies of circular. Electric Power Boards and Supply Authorities’ Association: Circular sent on to president of association for his comments. Association in great favour of anything which can be done to improve or hasten the steps being made to put this country on a total war footing and to prepare for its complete defence. Dannevirke Borough Council: Council has read letter and resolution with a good deal of interest and has expressed itself as being in complete agreement with the principles set out therein.

Unqualified Support

Ormondville Town Board: “That the Urmondville Town Board heartily supports the views expressed in the resolution passed by the Pukekohe Borough Council and will place the matter in the hands of the local member of Parliament, Sir Alfred Ransom, for transmission to the Right Honourable the Prime Minister.”

Awatere County Council (Seddon) : Received. Issues raised are very debatable.

Christchurch City Council: Resolved that letter lie on the table.

Oamaru Borough Council: Owing to the fact that a similar resolution had been passed at a public meeting in Oamaru, no action was taken. Morrinsville Borough Council: Representations on similar lines had been made to the Prime Minister and the Municipal Association.

Hastings Borough Council: No action at present. Auckland City Council: Not prepared to take the action suggested. Rangitikei County Council: Communications received.

Mangonui County Council: Support for clauses 2 and 3. Kaitaia Town Board: In favour of the principle of the scheme. Motueka County Council: Sympathetic but cannot take action at present.

Te Awamulu Borough Council: Communications received. Whakatane Borough Council: Received.

Waitotara County Council: Receipt acknowledged. Pahialua Borough Council: Received, no action to be taken. Howick Town Board: No action taken.

Patangata County Council (Waipukurau) : Communication favourably received.

Ellersiie Borough Council: The Government is doing everything possible that can be done for the war effort.
