LAWN TENNIS

FRANKLIN ASSOCIATION INTER-CLUB MATCHES BEGIN PUKEKOHE No. 1 BEATS No. 2 A start was made with the interclub competitions under the Franklin Tennis Association on Saturday and despite showery weather a number of matches were played. Heavy showers early in the afternoon caused several postponements and in some cases matches remain unfinished. On the local courts a late start was made on very wet courts and although the conditions improved fiuring the afternoon they were not ideal and the tennis suffered somewhat in consequence. The match between Pukekohe No. 1 and No. 2 teams resulted in a close contest between two well matched teams the issue being in doubt until the last match was finished at a late hour. No. 1 team won all the purely men’s matches and No. 2 all the ladies so that the combined events decided the issue. The win of Mrs Steele and Miss Seeley in the first ladies’ doubles was somewhat of a surprise but as the singles went the same way it show’s that it was true form. These tw T o and Miss Pillar and Mrs Gavin were appearing in these matches for the first time and they will undoubtedly greatly strengthen the club on the ladies’ side. The men’s matches were all won by the No. 1 team but every match was well fought out and much of the tennis was of a high standard. This applies particularly to the first two in singles and doubles. One of the best matches was between O. Commins and R. Bignell which was the last played and both players w’ere very tired. Although well in the veteran class Commins outlasted his younger opponent and considering the lack of practice this season he showed amazing activity and stroke control. The first men’s doubles was also a good match with the No. 2 pair slumping badly in the third set. Of the other players G. Rodgers and B. Gavin showed good form, the latter making his first appearance in the A grade showed possibilities of reaching a high standard. The match between St. James and Tuakau was postponed as was that between Waiuku No. 1 and No. 2 teams.
