Members of the School Committee, Borough Council and Parents’ Association were present..
The Mayor, Mr S. Evans, said lie counted it a privilege to come along to his old school, the work of which he was very interested in. • He referred to the good work done last Arbor Day when trees were planted on the Borough Council’s ground. Arbor Day, he said, was a great institution, and he, called the children’s attention-to their lovely Kirk’s hush, a beauty spot greatly admired always by travellers passing through the town. More than buildings trees were a stimulant to downcast spirits. “It is a mistake to plant a tree and not care for it.” added Mi: Evans. “We need to think of the future when these tree planting projects are taking place especially in relation to a new school building which was hoped for.” In conclusion he expressed pleasure that New Zealand had at ia'st realised the dangers of de-forestation. Mr G. if. Davis, chairman of the Parents’ Association, said it was his third year to officiate and lie was delighted when he walked round and noticed the growth of the young trees planted previously. They all showed that they were well cared for. tie congratulated the school on its clean and tidy appearance. Trees add beauty to the grounds. “Il is a good thing to plant a tree because it is one of the ideals of life.” he concluded. Lace barks were then planted by the following: Air Evans, Air Davis. Airs W. C. Rankin. Airs Halls, Air F. Osborne and the headmaster. Air T. N. Pemberton.
The prizes won by Ihe pupils at the Papakura Amateur Athletic Glut) fixtures were then presented by the president, Mr Frank Osborne. lie said he hoped this coming season would see even more pupils competing and if possible he would like to see greater support given ttie club by the parents. It was proposed, lie said, to hold sports on Saturday afternoons. Points prizes.—Girls: Glass I. D. Irvine: class 11. D. Cooper 1, I. Schwarlfeger 2. Roys: Glass 1. G. Wilkinson I. K. Learning 2 class 11. R. Dreadon 1. B. Learning 2: class ID. A. Smith 1. G. Learning 2. The Mayor’s cups for the mosl improved competitors in 12 months was presented by Air Evans to A. Smith and D. Irvine.
