LIQUOR AT DANCE HALLS
YOUNG MEN IN COURT FINES IMPOSED Being in possession of liquor in the vicinity of dance halls resulted in seven young men b ing fined in the Pukekohe Magistrate’s Court gn Wednesday. Mr F. H. Levien was the presiding magistrate. Matthew Cooney, electrician, of Tuakau. Owen. Cooney, farmer, of Yv’hangarata, and Keith McGregor were charged with being in possession of liquor in the vicinity of the Mercer town hall on February 8 while a dance was in progress.
The three defendants pleaded guilty and the first named was fined £4, while the other two were ordered to pay £3 each. Constables F. T. Wakelin of Mercer, and L. T. Webby of Pukekohe, said that they found the three defendants consuming liquor in the vicinity of the hall and took them to the police station at Mercer where they made statements.
Similar charges were preferred against Otto James Lindberg, farmer, Pukekawa, Noel George Mcßurnie. freezing works employee, Ngaruawahia, end Reginald Francis Berry, fitter, Iluntly.
Berry was convicted and fined £ i and Lindberg and Mcßurnie convicted and fined £3 with costs in each case.
Joseph Bernard McGrath was also charged with being in possession of liquor in the vicinity of a dance ball. A fine of £3 with costs 10s was imposed.
