THE BOROUGH COUNCIL j BUSINESS TRANSACTED | At the fortnightly meeting of the Papakura Borough Council, the Mayor 'Mi S. Evans, presided. The. followling were present: Messrs D. J. Grai liam, C. B. Bryant, 1. Mack, Cl. W. j Markwick and A. Burgess: also prej sent, Mr A. L. Cooper (town clerk), and Mr M. Finn (foreman). Apolo--1 gies were received from Messrs J. S. • de Montalk, D. McKenzie and 11. Montgomerie. Councillor's bereavement: Before the business of the evening was proceeded with, the (Mayor moved a vote of condolence and sympathy with Councillor .1. S. de Montalk, who has suffered a bereavement in the loss of his brother. Auckland Institute and Museum: The director. Mr Gilbert Archey, wrote tlianking the council for its donation additional to its annual contribution. State of Prince Edward Park: The mud and slush on Prince Edward Park was the subject of a complaint in a letter to the council by the secretary of the Rugby League Football Club, Mr R. C. Williams. The writer said the club was deeply concerned about the conditions of the playing area. There was practically no grass in some parts gnd the mud near the shed where the sheep shelter was three or tour inches thick.—The Mayor said that the exceptionally bad weather was in a large measure responsible, but any damage by the sheep would be counteracted by the good they would do later on. It was decided to put a load or two of metal round the pavilion and pass on the matter to the reserves committee with power to act.. Use of section: An application from Mr F. Basham for the use of a section at the eastern end of King street was approved. A communication from the Great South Road Beautifying Council was received setting out its accomplishments during the past year and stating that the affdiation fee of £2 2s was due. It was decided to forward the usual £2 2s. Messrs I. Mack and A. Burgess were appointed the council’s delegates. Request refused: After r.n appeal for a donation to the Rahiri Women s and Children’s Convalescent Home at Hamilton was read by the clerk, Mr A. L. Cooper, it was moved that the request lie on the table. Vestry’s appreciation: The secretary of the Christ Church Vestry, Mr H. Peel-Gatrell, wrote conveying its appreciation for the work the council had done in improving the footpath at the church and the vicarage A Complaint Garage proprietors’ complaint: “We desire to bring to the notice of the council the fact that up to the present we have not had any of the council’s business which is shared among other garages in the town,’’ stated a letter prom a Papakura garage. The letter further stated that the business paid £:U. in rates and £2OOO in wages. The clerk said that it was this firm’s fault as they had not replied to a certain request lie had made to them, while the other garages had. It was moved that the firm be given the same treatment as the other firms, and on the same conditions. In consideration ot the fact that this firm had had no business from the council it was decided to give them two months’ business in benzine, instead of the usual turn about of one month each to the other firms, after which it would revert to one month as in the case ot Ihe other garages. Permission was granted to the Auckland Orphanages Advisory Committee to take up a street collection on September 1. A decision was made not to contri- ' bute to the Municipal Air port Survey ! of the proposed Metropolitan Aero- '■ drome on the Manukau Harbour. | Sanitary inspectors report: The sanitary inspector, Mr R. .1- McGee, reported that no infectious diseases had been investigated in the borough. A sample of the borough water was stated to be satisfactory. | The recommendation ot the works committee that the foreman and members of the committee proceed to the citv to purchase a concrete mixer was approved. The council authorised the new kerbing to be laid in Averill street to be Oft. by sft.
