Women’s and Children’s Convalescent Home

PROPOSALS OUTLINED LOCALITY AT PUTARURU MEETING AT PUKGKOHE WANTED: 1000 HALF CROWNS A meeting of the Rahiri Women’s and Children’s Convalescent home Society was held at Pukekohe on Tuesday afternoon. Members of the Pukekohe women’s

organisations and Presbyterian

and Methodist churches were also

present.

An apology from the

Rev. W. G. Slade was made by a parishioner on account of an urgent call which prevented him being present. He wished the home a successful career. After the organiser explained the aims and objects of the home all present undertook to support the appeal.

It was resolved that an appeal he made in the name of “Nurse Boyd’s Half-Crown Fund” for Pukekohe and district and half-crowns were given to Nurse Boyd in support of her appeal at the meeting. Nurse Boyd’s halfcrown appeal is for 1000 half-crowns, and each week it will be announced in the Times the number of naif-crowns that she has received. Up io the time of going to press the number is 47.

Locality of the home is to be at Putaruru and the board has inspected several properties in that area, and selected one within ten miles of Putaruru which is a most suitable property from a farming point of view and a convalescent point of view also. There are at present approximately 150 doctors behind the scheme and it is hoped that more will be enlisted, as well as the general public. The society is enlisting not less than 2,000 members with an annual donation of £1 Is. The Main Objects The main objects of the home are for convalescent patients whose financial position prevent them from obtaining the necessary convalescent treatment which will restore them to good health again, where patients can, if necessary, receive convalescent treatment free. Furthermore the board intends to employ the establishment for prevention as well as cure, believing as they do that numbers of illnesses in the early stages are preventable if subjects are enabled to withdraw for a period from their own homes to a properly constituted establishment where they will receive attention under suitable conditions and free from worry and family care. This it is believed, particularly applies to women who will find the home situated, as it is, in a farming district so complete a change that recovery from illness will be rapid, and probably escape altogether from incipient illness. The home will be staffed by a fully qualified matron, nursing sisters, and a Karitane nurse and ten girls at a time will be trained in ordinary household duties., These girls will be used for taking charge of homes if necessary while mothers are undergoing convalescent treatment in the home itself, and for the benefit of members of the society. The initial venture will cost £30,000 and it is hoped that this amount will be forthcoming during the next six months. A strong appeal is now commenced from Auckland to Palmerston North and £12,000 is wanted urgently to purchase the property and commence the erection of the building. At the close of the meeting the organiser was thanked for his address and all agred that the object was a very laudable one and should find ready response throughout the Pukekohe district.
