FARMERS’ COMPETITIONS
CONDUCTED AT MAUKU THE JUDGE’S AWARDS’ Competitions conducted by the Mauku Farmers’ Union this season attracted fairly large entries although not as numerous as in past years. Keen rivalry still exists between the Karaka and Mauku ends of the district and as the results indicate, there is very little difference in the quality of the entries over tlie whole area. The judge, Mr J. E. Bell, announced the awards at a social gathering of members of the branch, held in the Mauku Victory hall on Monday evening as follows: — . Mangold competition.—A. Woolsey, 54-1 tons, 81 points for quality and type—total 631 points, first: H. Brown 46 — 8J —541, second; G. Willis, 281 6 —341, third. Pasture competition.—Points fur sward, summer, 25; winter, 50; points for management, 25; grand total, 100. J. D. Paton, 11 —43 —16 —70, first;’ R. J. Bullock-Webster, 2 —44—23 — 69, second; E. M. Wright (far), 8 - 37 —21 — 66; E. M. Wright (near)., 9 — 36 —21 —66 (equal), third; E. Hill, 5 — 37 —23 —05, fourth; Pearson Bros. 43 —29 —22 —64, fifth.

White (ensilage). C. A. Moore (mangold). There, was no competition for swedes this year on account of the unfavourable season, and last year’s winner, Mr A. W. Gordon, vetains the cup. The winners were complimented on their success, and appeals made to the unsuccessful competitors and members of the branch generally to enter for the competitions next. year. The judge took the opportunity of commenting on the entries on which he was asked io adjudicate.
