WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
PAPAKURA MEETING. SEVERAL COMPETITIONS. There was a very good attendance at the monthly meeting of tlie Papakura Women’s Institute held in the Methodist hall on Thursday. The president, Mrs V. Houghton, extended a hearty welcome to the visitors and new members. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Middleton, Smeed and Bryant, who were indisposed, and Mrs T. Barr and Miss Glasgow.
The meeting opened with the National Anthem and community singing. Invitations were rcccvied from Pukekohe East branch to its third birthday and from the Papakura Croquet Club to its opening. The roll call, “The most useful thing in the kitchen,” provoked some very humorous replies, such as Hie cook, the teapot, the broom, a sharp knife, water, and various others too numerous to mention.
The competitions resulted: Puff pastry, six jam tarts, Miss K. Evans 1. Mrs W. Kitson 2. Mrs 11. C. Baulf 3. Flora 1 spray, Mrs Fox 1, Mrs V. Houghton 2, Mrs G. Markwick .3. Oven cloth. Sister Gliffe 1. Mrs V. Houghton 2, Mrs 11. G. Baulf 3. The winner of the worked quill was Mrs A. L. Turner. A demonstration of puff-pastry making was given by Mrs E. G. Smith, members displaying great interest in remarks mnd advice on tbe subject. A vole of Thanks to Mrs Smith for the trouble she had gone to in preparing : the demonstration was carried by ac- ! clamation.
Several pleasing items were contributed by the following: Mrs Juby (Whangamarino institute), who sang songs, “It’s Quiet Down Here” and “Coming Through the Rye,” and a description song by a school child: tap dancing by Miss Z. Charles: Miss Norah Clark, who sang “Lovers in the Lane” and “Have you seen but a White Lily Grow”: two duets entitled “My Prayer” and “Where My Caravan Has Bested,” Mesdames B. Lever and Baulf. The accompanists were Mrs
Craddock of Mount Albert, and Mrs G. W. O’Connell.
Announcements were made by the president that a flower show would be held this week in aid of the institute croquet lawn, and that Miss Stops of England, would address a combined meeting of the Ilunua, Homai, Weymouth and Papakura institutes in the Broadway lounge next Friday. A dainty afternoon tea was served.
