A First Offender.

A first offender for drunkenness who appeared in the Pukekohe Police Court to-day before Messrs C. K. Lawrie and D. McC. Armstrong, J.P.’s, was convicted and fined Bs, the amount of bail allowed.

Fire Brigade Euchre Evenings. In an advertisement in this issue, the Pukekohe Fire Brigade advises its numerous supporters that the popular euchre evenings have again been arranged. The first of the season will be held in the fire station next Wednesday at 8 o’clock.

“Music Hall” at the Strand.

Lovers of English variety entertainment should not fail to see “Music Hall,” the R.K.O. British special to be screened at the Strand theatre to-nighi (Monday). With a large array of English stage and screen stars, and featuring the famous Debroy Somers Band, “Music Hall” offers a feast of music, comedy and romance. Excellent featurettes are also listed.

Borough Water.

Advice was received by the Pukekohe Borough Council last week from the District medical officer, that a bacteriological examination of a sample of water taken from the power house circuit on April 17, proved same to be pure. The chairman of the waterworks committee, Cr. G. T. Parvin, reported that a defect had developed in the chlorinating plant, and it had been necessary for the committee to obtain the services of an engineer from Auckland. The report was received and the committee’s action confirmed.

“Too Many Duties.” At last week’s meeting of the Pukekohe Borough Council, Cr; .A. F. Brown expressed the opinion that the foreman, Mr S. J. Clews, was saddled with too many duties. In fact he has too much to do and it is not fair to him, added Cr. Brown. At the present time there was a fair amount of building going on, and a great deal of valuable time was taken up by the foreman having to act os budding inspector. Cr. Brown suggested that io have Ihe dulies carried out succesfuby a pari lime officer !>•> appointed 1o act as building and noxious weeds inspector. The suggestion was referred to the finance commit lee for a report.

Young People’s Social Club.

There was an attendance of 70 at the first club “night” arranged by the Sf. Andrew’s Young People's Social Club, held in the parish hall on Saturday evening. Proceedings commenced shortly after 7.30, and ended at J 1.30, and there was not a dull moment from starL to finish. The young people entered into the spirit of the evening with enthusiasm and thoroughly enjoyed the varied programme presented. This included a guessing competition, green pea hunt, a singing game, vocal items and dancing. Ex-

cellent music was supplied by Mrs G. Bowden, Miss Mavis Peterson and Miss Annette Bowden, while Mr K. 11. Mellsop proved a most efficient master of ceremonies. A name guessing competition was won by Miss Rosa Bonner, while the group styled “Cats,” carried off the green pea hunt, and the “Donkeys” the singing competition. I Misses M. Lewis and D. Blackledge 1 won the Monte Carlo waltz. Vocal items given by Misses Eunice McGrath. Gwen Lee and .Toy Gasparich were much appreciated. The elder folk instructed the younger in the art of dancing. A light supper, comprising tea and sandwiches, was served. Miss Daphne Bowden proving a most, popular hostess. During the evening the young people were addressed on ballroom etiquette and Ihe rules of Hie club, particularly those with regard lo misbehaviour, any semblance of which, ii was stated, would be promptly and sternly dealt with by the executive.
