ITEMS OF INTEREST. BOMBAY NOTES. W.E.A. GROUP MEETING. The W.E.A. group held its Anal meeting last week, when members assembled at the residence o! Mr A. Brown to receive the report and statement of accounts for the session. The report disclosed a roll number of 14 and an average attendance of 6.5. Although small in number, members had been very keen and entered fully into discussions, and that a very valuable study had been made. The s ,. course of 24 lectures was “What is Western Civilisation? Part I—an historical introduction.” It was agreed that the most profitable course for study next year would be “Part ll—the contemporary scene.” The report contained expressions of thanks to the Bombay Library Committee for’ making available the library for meetings; to the publishers of “The Franklin Times” for publicity; to the headquarters staff of W.E.A.; and to the director of W.E.A., Mr N. M. Richmond, 8.A., for his continued and kindly interest in the group’s activities. A criticism of the course studied was appended in the form of answers to a .(questionnaire, supplied by headquarters. The statement of accounts showed a small credit balance, which the group directed the treasurer to forward to headquarters. The meeting accorded hearty votes of thanks to the auditor, Mr A. Brown, to the president of the group, Mr P. Smyth, and to the secretary-treasurer, Mr C. H. Kingsford. At the conclusion of the meeting a, social evening was held, a hearty vote of thanks to the hostess, Mrs, A. Brown, terminating a very pleasant function.; It is hoped that members of the group may be kept together through the summer months by means of occasional play-readings, and that an early start may be made next year on the course selected. Members of, the Bombay library committee assembled on a recent evening to farewell Miss McKenzie, who is leaving the district. Miss McKenzie has been librarian for a number of years.

On behalf of the assembly, Mr J. A. Lowry presented her with a handbag in appreciation of her efforts. Supper was provided by the ladies. Miss Burgess has been appointed librarian. '

In celebration of the second anniversary of the opening of the Buckland hall, a social was held on Wednesday evening by the social committee of the welfare league. Dance music was played by Hulme’s orchestra, and Miss P. Gillingham contributed extras. Messrs G. Hewitt and F. Seeley were masters of ceremonies. Prizes for cards were won by Mrs F. Lewis and Mr C. Butcher.

PUKEOWARE NEWS; SPORTS CLUB’S DANCE. Arranged by the Pukeoware Tennis and Croquet Clubs, a most successful “hard-up” dance was held on Saturday igyening,^there being a large attendance* ’ j v 1 The Jhall was artistically decorated for the; occasion. Music was played by orchestra, Mrs Reid, Messrs jJ|. Envyright and G, Watt contributing'extra'numbers. The prizes for the bmstappropriate costumes were aXvarded to Misses M. DANCE AT PUNI.

FUNDS FOR XMAS TREE. A most successful dance was held in the Puni hall on Monday last, under the auspices of the Puni Women’s Division. The hall was most beautifully and effectively decorated in red, white and blue, with clumps of arum lilies adorning the stage. The decorations were carried out by Mrs McNeil, Mrs Bennett and Miss D. Fallows, and much credit is due to them for the splendid result. The duties of master of ceremonies were performed by Mr J. S. Wilcox. Music was provided by Mrs Keane’s orchestra. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss D. Parton and Mr L. Rawley. The winners of the lucky polonaise were Mrs F. .Rogers and Mr Sloop, and a statue log cabin was won by Miss D. Parton and partner. The ladies prizes were given by Mrs Mansfield. Dance extras were played by Miss M. Young and Mrs Frank Rogers, and vocal solos were given by Mr Hobdell. A splendid supper was provided 'by members of the division. ’ • Mr Wilcox thanked all those who had attended and also the women’s division for getting up such a successful dance in aid of a Christmas tree for the children of Puni. The motion of thanks was carried by acclamation.

The president of the division, Mrs Preece, then thanked Mr. Wilcox on 1 behalf of. members of" the; division for the valuable assistance he had rendered. This was also carried by ac-, clamation. With the proceeds from the dance, supplemented by other funds, it is hoped to give the children a real treat on the night qf the Christmas tree. 4
