BOWLING NOTES.

THE PAPAKURA CLUB.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The annual meeting of the Papakura Bowling Club was held on Monday evening, when the president, Mr G. Agmen Smith, presided over the following members: Messrs J. Andrew, T. F. Snell, H. McCallum, F. Lound, J. F. .Johnstone, F. Kirton, H. E. McEntee, P. Hunt, T. G. Smith, G. W. O'Connell, J. D. Whitmore, J. Bates, W. McEntee and A. Hammond. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs H. Bartells, E. Searle, G. Goddard and S. Evans. No annual report was submitted owing to the secretary having left the district. The treasurer's statement showed a deficit of somewhere in the vicinity of £l6 7s sd. This it was hoped to wipe out with £2O 7s subscriptions outstanding. It was also stated that some wages were still owing. The tournament showed a profit of £s—£l4 18s being received and £9 7s expended. It was decided to support the nomination of Mr J. H. Keith, as country representative to the centre

Tre resignation of Mr P. Mullins, of Ardmore, was accepted with regret. The preseident remarked he was sorry indeed to see the resignation. Levelling of the Green. A very interesting report was received from Mr .1. D. Whitmore, one of the club members, who had taken the levels of the green and made the following recommendations: "On May 1 last, Mr G. W. O'Connell assisted me with the levelling staff. I ran thirty trial levels over the green and found a difference between the highest and lowest points of about one tenth of a foot, equalling approximately 1 1-8 inches. Under the circumstances I consider it inadvisable to bring the green up to a true level in one operation as the depth of filling" in places would be too great, and therefore suggest that only half the apparent error be corrected this season and that the green be brought up to a true level for the following season. If this suggestion is adopted it will mean that , some rinks will be practically true for

I play whilst others will contain slight ridges which should not materially affect the bias of the bowl, if judicious care is exercised in the cutting and rolling. The amount of soil required for top-dressing this season to correct half the apparent error will amount to about 11 cubic yards, and as there is now stored on hand approximately eight or nine yards, more will have to be obtained. In this connection Messrs McEntee Bros, have kindly offered to give the top soil from under their workshop floor, providing the cluli removes if and pays for the cost of its cartage to the green. This seems to me a most reasonable offer as the soil should be in first class condition for our purposes and I feel that it would pay the club to accept it and obtain as much as possible for future

use. In connection with the topdressing I suggest that lulbs of grass seed (half brown top and half proa pratensis) be used, together with 2| cwt. of bone flour."

The report then dealt with the treatment of the green prior to its opening Tor play and the following suggestions were made: (1) One month prior to the opening day scythe the grass and finish close to ground with mower, then go over the whole with the dragstraight edge and fill in any depressions that may have developed. Then thoroughly spike roll in all directions and give a light topdressing of blood and bone, say about 50 lbs. (2) Leave undisturbed for a fortnight. (3) Two weeks from opening day, cut and roll, daily, each alternate operation to be at right angles to the preceding one. Mr Whitmore offered the above suggestions for what they were worth and trusted that the report as a whole would help the members to arrive at some workable and useful conclusion

Gratification Expressed. The president said the club should be very grateful to Mr Whitmorc for the advice he had given. The suggestions were well worth listening to. |

Mr H. E. McEntee moved a hearty ! vote of thanks to Mr Whitmore for his very valuable advice, which, he i said, was worth the chili's serious consideration. I

Mr G. W. O'Connell's name was addI ed to the motion which was carried J with enthusiastic acclamation. Mr Lound urged the members to roll up to working bees from now onward, stating clearly llial I here was a fair amount of work that could not be done in a day or a week. He recommended two half days to start with — Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. There was a good response from tho members to turn up. Mr Lound said the green would have to be pegged out first and topdressing commenced. , A hearty vote of thanks was accorded by the members to Messrs McEntee ■ Bros, for* their kindness in donating soil for topdressing. This was also

The Election of Officers. enthusiastically carried. The election of officers resulted:—< Patron, Mr\E. D. McLennan (re-elect-ed) ; president, the outgoing president, Mr Smith, regretted very much he had not heen able to do more for the club but being away in England part of the time, he had not the opportunity to do as much as he would have liked to have done and he hoped they would put a better man in.
