A Clever Canine. Pedestrians in Victoria Street. Hamilton, recently witnessed a fine exhibilion of motor-riding by a big English coilio. An observer stopped in the middle of the roadway (o allow a motor transport waggon to pass, lie was startled by a loud bark right in his car. Looking up, he saw a do? bounding about over the tarpaulins which covered a load, of cases. Right along Victoria Street the animal continued its gambols, .lumping over the cases and up on to the cabin roof, barking excitedly all the time. It was a revelation to watch its sure-footed springs and sharp turns, all performed with perfect equilibrium on the quick-moving vehicle. This collie must be a mascot of the motor transport business.

I Springs Creek, Patumahoe. "As instructed, I have inspected the stream through Messrs Howe's and Hardy's properties: the inspection look place on July 3. The section of stream through Mr Hardy's has been satisfactorily cleared to meet all drainage requirements," said the engineer. Mr J. F. MeArthur, in a report to the Franklin County Council on Monday. "Mr Howe's section of stream is badly overgrown and if cleared wouid undoubtedly enable Mr Suckling to improve the drainage of a portion of his I property above Mr Howe's. Before, however, any benefit would be derived, from such clearing Mr : Suckling would require to clear the stream through his property. I would therefore recommend the council to adopt the following procedure: To get an undertaking from Mr Suckling that he wpuld clear his section of the stream, if the section through Mr Howe's were completed; provided the above undertaking is obtained, the council to serve notice on Mr Howe to have the stream through his property cleared; as an alternative, serve notices on both Messrs Suckling and Howe to clear the stream through their properties." The en- j gineer was asked to meet Messrs Suck- I ling and Howe on the ground.
