ARCHDEACON OF MANUKAU. VISIT TO THE DISTRICT. fOwn Correspondent) .* •On Sunday, the' Venerable W. ,J, Simkin, Archdeacon of Manukau, visited the Clevedon Anglican parish. In the evening he preached at All Souls*
church, Clevedon, on the subject of * "Hope" when a large congregation was present. He spoke of "Hope" in the life of the church as shown by the Bishops assembled for Lambeth Conference:. of "Hope" needed ki civil life in dealing with such questions as that of unemployment, and of "Hope"
in the life of individuals, as exemplified in the career of Sir Joseph Ward, the telegraph messenger who became Prime Minister. The sermon wa§ most interesting and held the congregation. During the day reference was made to the death of Sir Joseph' Ward at the ' services in Alfriston and Ardmora and appropriate prayers were offered.
I The county council staff is engaged I in,putting in a drain to carry off the storm water from the south end of the main street. A trench has beea dug from in front of Mr M. K. Trott's house past Mr Fawsett's entrance and Messrs Hawthorn and Munro's premises almost as far as Mr J. Henderson's house. When completed the work should prevent flooding in this part of the township.
The ladies' croquet club held an enjoyable social last week. There was a good attendance, and all spent an enjoyable time. Excellent music was supplied and the hall floor was in good order. As usual the social was a most popular function.
The Presbyterian Sunday Schools for Clevedon, Ardmore, Ness Valley, Otau and Mataifai hold their annual examination on Saturday last. The / public school was lent for ihe occasion and the Rev. S. C. Francis, minister of the charge was supervisor, a large number of scholars sitting for the examination.

\. AND P. ASSOCIATIONS' BANQUET
i The Clevedon A. and P. Association is celebrating its 21st anniversary with a banquet in the hall on Friday. August 1. It is expected that a large number. of members and friends will be' present. Tickets are now available from the secretary. Mr D. M. Bryan, Clevedon. The association has made remarkable growth since its foundation, and last year's work •showed great progress over the previous one. so that the annual meeting decided to mark the anniversary coming of age with a banquet, feeling that it was only fitting to mark the occasion in some special way. : An energetic committee have been busy and now have all the arrangements well in hand. »
