CLEVEDON NEWS.

PROGRESS OF ROADWORKS. IMPROVEMENTS BEING EFFECTED. | cOwn Correspondent!. j Men from the unemployed relief camp near Mr Day's house on Mountain Road are t making~a great improvement on the road between Clevedon and Brookby. Bad corners have been cut away, the grade improved and a roadway eighteen feet wide has been formed for almost the whole distance. The work has been finished on the Clevedon side of the "hill, while good progress is being made on the Brookby side where a large cutting is being made near Mr W. C. Knight's boundary. The horse-shoe bend on the Clevedon side of where Mr Fred Kimpton's house formerly stood is being filled in, the culvert lengthened and ttie road widened. It is expected that the work will be finished* before Christmas and the road opened for traffic. The road should be useful as a means of shortening the distance between Clevedon and the Manurewa-Howick main highway. The opening of a road for motor traffic between Clevedon and Hunua is proceeding apace. From Clevedon South the road follows the old route as far as Mrs E. E. Walsh's house. From this point the narrow track has been widened up to Mr S. V. Whites house. Here the new road leads past Mr George Walsh's house and keeps along the ridge to Mr A. D. McGregor's. The camp.for the unemployed relief workers is situated nearby and is as far as motor can go at present. The men are now working on the last stretch of road leading to the road to Hunua near the new bridge. It is expected that the whole road will nc open for motors in about six weeks. This new road should prove attractive to motorists, who could come from Auckland via Clevedon South, visit Hunua Falls and return through Hunua Gorge to Papakura. It will also open up a large area of land which has had only a sledge track by way of access previously. As a stock route between Clevedon and Hauraki Plains it will be of very great value.

Mr Herbert Walsh, of Clevedon South, who has been under treatment for injuries received to his leg some years ago, is in the Mater Misericordiae Hospital. Last week he underwent a very severe operation, but is now progressing as well as can be expected.

Mrs George Atkins, a well-known resident of Clevedon, is at present confined to her room and is under medical care.
