“A BIT TOO HOT.”

BAD LANGUAGE IN KING STREET.

HEAVY FINE IMPOSED. “You’ve a pretty good chance of going for a stretch of 12 months for using language of this description,” said Mr F. Perkins, J.P., at a sitting of the Police Court yesterday, when a Maori named sjtete Toetoe was charged, before Messrs F.’lPerkins and .T. Patterson, J.P.’s, with being found drunk and with using obscene language in King Street, Pukekohe, on July 27. Accused pleaded guilty. Constable David Millar, who prosecuted, said that at 11.20 a.m. on Monday last accused was under the influence of liquor and created a disturbance in a billiard saloon in King Street. When asked to quit he used the filthy language complained of in the charge-sheet. “Yes, it is pretty hot,” remarked Mr Perkins.

“Bit of a Pest.”

“This Maori is a bit of a pest when he gets a drop in,” declared Constable Millar, “but when he is sober he is quite a decent chap.” “This language is a bit too strong to use in any public street, and if you want to swear in future or use filthy language of this nature get away out into the bush where no one can hear you. We intend to give you a chance,” said Mr Perkins. “You will be fined £5 for using obscene language, while the charge of drunkenness will be dismissed.”

Accused was ordered to pay witness’ expenses amounting to £l, in default two months’ imprisonment.

A fortnight was allowed to find the money.

Accused also consented to the issue of a prohibition order.
