;Mr H. E. R. L. Wily, of Mauku, left on Saturday on a holiday visit to Hastings. Mr D. Trevarthen, of Pukekohe, was successful in gaining a commission—second lieutenancy—at the military examinations held recently. Mr W. .1. White, . of Palmerston North, who has been spending a few days’ holiday with Mr and Mrs E. E. Ingpen, of Pukekohe, left by the Main Trunk express last evening for Palmerston North. Mr John Gordon, of Hamilton, who lias been appointed one of the four Government assessors on the newly set up Valuation Board, leaves for Wellington early this week to assume his duties.
Messrs Claud Motion, G. Buchanan, R. M. Somerville and A. J. Sinclair, representing the New Zealand Cooperative Dairy Company, and Mr Marvyn Wells, representing the Cambridge Co-operative Dairy Company, leave Hamilton to-night for Wellington to attend, a meeting of the New Zealand Dairy Producers’ Council. Among the matters fo be discussed will be the steps to be taken to make the Dairy Export Control Act effective and to select candidates for the board. A sincere tribute to the memory of the late Mr T. F. Cheeseman has been placed on record by the council of the Auckland Ipstitute and Museum. A motion, proposed by the president, Mr J. T Gunson, and seconded b, Professor A. P. W. Thomas, was carried, recording the deep regret of the council at the death of Mr Cheeseman, secretary and curator of the Auckland Institute and Museum for the past 49 years The resolution also recorded the council’s great sense of appreciation of the invaluable and consistent services rendered by Mr Cheeseman throughout that lengthy period to the cause of science, not only in the Dominion where his work was conducted, but throughout the world, where in his own branch of knowledge and research hia work was deemed to be classical and was wide-
