FOOTBALL NOTES.

I P JKEKOHE COMPETITIONS. I I , A MUD SCRAMBLE. The Pukekohe Rugby Sub Union’s competitions were continued on Saturday. The weather was bleak and showery and-.the ground was in a very bad state, The only senior match played on the domain was that between City (red) and Ramblers (blue). Ramblers kicked off and were assisted by a strong wind. At once the blues set up a vigorous offensive and play settled in City’s territory. Fausett had an easy opportunity to open the scoring account but the ball failed to rise and City forced. Lucas commenced a forward rush for City, and when in a handy position ti e ball, was cross-kicked to Wright, and the winger, going at top speed, gathered up the ball and dived for the line, but he was pushed out at the corner post. Rambleis’ forwards worked®!heir way to City’s 25, where Fausett had another unsuccessful shot at goal. Lewis was S’een to advantage in stemming a determined attack by Rambleis, and a good clearing kick found touch near half way. Marshall now broke through with the ball, at his boot, but Wright ot’st; ucted toe movement and the attackers were repelled. The ground, by this time, had been converted into a quagmire, while the ball was so slippery that anything like sure handling was out of the question. The game therefore resolved itself into n exhibition of “soccer.” Players frequently lashed out and as frequently they missed and flopped into the mud to the great amusement of the crowd. E. Wilkinson and J. Lewis, both of whom were playing fine games, were particularly noticeable in this respect. JTo describe the run of the play would be difficult because bnllL.nt movements were hampered owing to the adverse conditions. The side aided by the gale was always attacking, and it really meant a test of defensive capabilities. City predominated in this direction. When aided by the wind they piled on 18 points, while Ramblers failed to score. The score does not give a true indication of the respective merits of the teams.

On the day City was a trifle the better team and deserved to win. Early in the second quarter Hinton kicked a goal for City, while soon if ter Lucas wriggled hia way across the line. In the final quarter M. Needham scored a try which W. Reynolds improved on. Leatherland picked up the ball near the goal posts and potted a splendid goal, and towards the close of the game Carr out-paced the opposition and scored a try wide out. The game ended : City 18 ; Ramblers 0. White Star G v. Patumakoe 3,

The White Star-Patumahoe match took place at Patumahoe. A very even game resulted in a three-point victory for White Star. Tries for the winners were scored by Sutton and Watson, while Wallace crossed the line for Patumahoe. Junior IWaiches. White Star beat Ramblers. City forfeited to Patumahoe. Representative TVlatch. A weak Franklin team journeyed to Te Kauwhata on Saturday to meet the Waikare representative team. Waikare won by eleven points to nil.
