A CHANGE WANTED
QUESTION OF SANITARY SITE.^ WARM DISCUSSION. The Pukekohe Borough Council met last evening, when there were present : His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. Routly) Cr's G T. Parvin, (deputy mayor), J. F. McArthur, M. Cronin, W S. Russell, J. T. Stembridge, J. P. Rae ; R. F. Wilkinson, the clerk (Mr J. F. Deane), the foreman (Mr S. JClews), and the electrical engineer (Mr W. Wyatt). Mr R. J. Smyth wrote withdrawing his offer of a portion of his property at Paerata for the purpose of a nightsoil depot. Cr Parvin said he understood Franklin County Council received protest from the residents of Paerata against the establishment of a nightsoil dump on Mr Smyth’s property. He moved that, the question of reviewing the whole of the sanitary service be referred back to the , sanitary committee for a report.. The Mayor : You are determined to 1 die hard over this matter, aren’t you ? Cr Parvin : Yes. my intention is to have the service carried out by contract. The'Mayor: Has it ever occurred to you th/e extra cost it would be to the ratepayers, and the loss of revenue for expendiure on the domain if other arrangements were made?* I would like the public present to, take a note of what I have said. Cr Parvin : And I would like the . public present to bear in mind it is not in the best interests of the public, nor in the interests of the health of the children attending the High School, or anyone using the swimming baths, for the dump to remain where it is. I hope, with the assistance of my colleagues, to have the nightsoil of elsewher^ I believe arrangements can be made for a suitable site. If the service was carried out by contract, the borough would be assured of a, better service. Have you ever been over the present dump after heavy rain ? asked Cr Parvin. “Well; if you have not, you should go. I have been told the effluent floats about on the surface. Such a state of affairs is an absolute disgrace, and I am out to have it remedied. It was there without the permission of th« residents.” The Mayor: Do you know that Dr I Maegiil, an officer of the Health department approved of the site ? J Cr Parvin: I don’t care Macgill approved of. That is my opinion. The Mayor: I have been across the site scores of times, and there was no tiling- offensive as far my smelling powers go. Gr Wilkinson seconded Cr Parvin’s motion, which was carried.
