MERITORIOUS VICTORY FOR FERRIER IN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

Jim Ferrier won the national professional go a championship to-day tiy defeating Melvin harbert, 2 up and 1 to pi ay, in the 36-hole final at Detroit. terrier and Harbert were all square at the eighteenth hole. Harbert gained his stroke advantage with long-distance drives and approaches, while Ferrier stayed even on match play with his grand putting. Ferrier went ahead at the twentyfirst, where he played a remarkable shot. Harbert evened the score again at the twenty-second, but Ferrier won the twenty-third when he holed a 40-foot putt. ' Ferrier won both the twentyfourth and the twenty-fifth, to make him 3 up, and he retained this lead to the turn. He had five birdies on the outward nine The twenty-eighth and twenty-ninth holes were halved, and then Harbert sank a 40-footer to win the thirtieth, reducing Ferrier’s lead to 2 up. Ferrier maintained this lead to wiu the match on the thirtyfifth green. Ferrier was five under par for the day. For the entire tournament —36 holes of the qualifying and five rounds of match play—lie was 27 strokes under par. He had never previously won a major title in the United States, and had not won any tournament this year. To-dav's victory was worth 3,500 dollars to Ferrier. Entries from 263 golfers, including 13 from overseas, have been received for the British open golf championship, which will commence on June 30.
