SUBSTANTIAL DROP IN INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION IN AUSTRALIA
(Rec. 8 a.m.) MELBOURNE, June 25. Industrial production in Australia slumped by more than £8,000,000 in 1945-46 as compared with the previous years, according to figures submitted by the various States to the Depart--ment of Post-war Reconstruction. The value of production in 194546 was £354,005,326, compared with £362,281,355 in 1944-45. The drop was most noticeable in New South Wales, though the South Australia and Queensland figures also showed substantial decreases. Western Australia was the b.nly State which showed a substantial rise in production value, though both Tasmania and Victoria recorded increases. Causes of the decline vary from State to State, hut are given as the decline in munitions manufacture, strikes, power troubles, and reduction in overtime.
