CANBERRA CONFERENCE ON JAP. TREATY WELCOMED BY BRITAIN
(Ree. 9 a.m.) LONDON. .June 25. Lord Addison. Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs, at a Press conference, said the Government welcomed the decision to hold a Commonwealth conference on the Japanese Peace Treaty in Canberra. Britain in the past had been too prone to require Commonwealth representatives to travel to London for important conferences on Imperial affairs and had not recognised the value of the interchange of visits between Empire countries. The principle of holding such a conference in the Commonwealth centres presumably would be followed in the future. Lord Addison added that no definite agenda was fixed for the Canberra discussions, which would largely be exploratory, and from which it was hoped a definite plan would emerge for presentation of the Empire’s viewpoint in the final treaty discussions.
