STARTLING INCREASES IN PRICE OF N.S. WALES TIMBER
SYDNEY, June 25. Startling increases in New South Wales timber prices, adding £650,000 a year to building costs, are expected to be announced by the Prices Commissioner in the next few weeks. Tho industry believes that increases as high as 12 per cent, will be authorised for some lines in urgent demand. All sawn hardwoods will be affected, but flooring sizes will be increased the most steeply. . Timber authorities consider it inevitable that the new prices will be followed by similar adjustments for New South Wales carriage, cabinet, and case-making timber within a month. The prices of hardwood timber have needed adjusting since the sawmillers switched over from wartime siies to those needed for home building.
