GREEK DRAMA ‘ALCESTIS.'
Sir.—The O.U.D.S. advertisement for the forthcoming production of the * Alcestis ’ of Euripides states that “ this is the first time Greek drama has been performed on our stage.” If “ our stage ” be taken as referring to the O.U.D.S. productions only, I have no comment; but if it refers to the Dunedin stage, or to the stage of His Majesty’s Theatre, where the ‘ Alcestis ’ will be performed, the statement is wrong. Some 15 years ago Dame Sybil Thorndike appeared m Dunedin at His Majesty’s, -in the 1 Medea ’; she had a-notable company with her, the chorus being particularly effective, the production was preceded by dancing a la Isadora Duncan, in the classical Greek, style,' by the Mar-tin-Harveys. I will be more than pleased if this letter accidentally stimulates interest in the O.U.D.S. production of 1 Alcestis ’; which promises to provide the drama-loving public with something unusual and stimulating.— I am, etc., D. Scott. June 23.
