Safeguarding Wanganella

Because of new measures to keep the ship buoyant as she lies alongside Clyde quay. Wellington, two of the Public Works Department’s eight-ton compressors were taken off the Wanganella yesterday. Electricity has been connected to supply two new compressors, and the ship’s own power is being used for additional compression. Since the Wanganella went to Clyde quay from the dock, the pumping equipment lias been increased, and as many leaks as possible have been sealed, so that the air compression now required is abo'ut one-sixth of that necessary to keep the ship afloat after she left the dock. The Wanganella was in an exposed position during the previous night’s- storm, but no ill-effects are reported. City Reservoirs Full

Full bore scouring, an operation performed by the water department to clear the mains, was begun on June 18. Scouring is never undertaken unless the city, reservoirs are full, the city engineer, Mr S. G. Scoular, told the ‘ Star ' this morning, but there had been a great recovery from the levels of last month, and the storage to-day amounted to 143,236,000 gallons. Householders in Dunedin have noticed that water from the taps has been discoloured in recent Weeks, and the fact that the last occasion on which the reticulation network was scoured was January 6, may account for this. The department carries out £he cleaning of the mains twice a year, -Mr Scoular told the ‘ Star.’ Popularity of Bowls

An increase of 1,964 bowlers throughout the Dominion in the current year is shown in the annual report of the New Zealand Bowling Association. In the 437 clubs, distributed throughout 22 centres, the membership rose from 25,503 bowlers in 1946 to 27,467 this year.
