DOMINION’S CHEQUES FOR FLOOD RELIEF HANDED LONDON’S MAYOR

(N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent.) (iß.ec. 11.15 a.m.) LONDON, April 28. “ I thank you very much for these marvellous gifts. It is a great and generous gesture,” said Sir Bracewell Smith, Lord Mayor of London, to Mr W. J. Jordan, Mr W. W. Mulholland, and Mr S. A. Chisholm, at Mansion House, when they presented him with cheques for the Lord Mayor’s National Flood Distress Fund. Mr Jordan, on behalf of the New Zealand Government, handed Sir Bracewell Smith a cheque for £200,000 sterling, and Mr Mulholland gave him a cheque for £IOO,OOO sterling on behaif of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board. Both expressed New Zealand’s sympathy for those whom the floods had affected, and admiration for the people of Britain. The Lord Mayor, who mentioned that the 'fund had now reached £2,300,000. .introduced the New Zealanders to thp staff handling applications for relief from area committees, and he explained that the principle was to provide goods rather than cash to those in need of help. “ You can have no idea how welcome your cheques will be,” he added.
