THE ATOM BOMB
COULD DEFEAT AN EMPIRE OVERNIGHT BRITISH OBSERVER'S VIEWS ‘ LONDON, March 4, ; An entire empire could be defeated overnight by one lone aero- 1 plane carrying atom bombs, said Group-captain Cheshire, who observed the atom bombing at Nagasaki. In a v broadcast, Group-cap-tain Cheshire said: “ if man entrusts the custody of the atomic, power to purely human wisdom, then I hold tittle brief for civili-, sation’s future." Dr Bronowski, the scientific member of the British team which . went to Japan to report on‘the atom bomb effect, said: “if a similar bomb to those dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima was exploded over the centre of one of our large cities, it .could be expected to kill 50,000 persons." He added that he believed the only defence against atom bombs would be to evacuate the big cities. It would be a considerable time before atom bombs were common enough to waste on cities of under 100,000 inhabitants.
