EXPLORATION ENDED
CONTINENT ALMOST CIRCUMNAVIGATED (Rec. noon.) NEW YORK, March 5. The Byrd expedition ended its exploring operations last night, when the Western Wing headed for Sydney. Its mother ship, Currituck, steamed 3,600 miles around the Antarctic coast, and its three Mariner seaplanes photographed 385,000 • square miles in a largely uncharted area Captain Robert Quackenbush. chief of staff, said to-day that the Eastern and Western Task Group ships came within 500 nautical miles of circumnavigating the Antarctic continent. The Western Group at one time steamed beyond the Prince Olaf coast of' Enderby Land, while the Eastern Group passed through the Weddell Sea, crossed the Greenwich meridian,* and was off the Princess Astrid coast of Queen Maud Land. The ice-breaker Northwind joined the Mount Olympus to-day, and both were expected to reach Wellington on March 7. Tho Northwind found 100 penguins at Antipodes Island yesterday, and is taking 55 home as specimens.
