CINE-PHOTOGRAPHIC CLUB

ADDRESS ON 'LIGHT' A meeting of tile Otago Cine-Photo-graphic Club was held in the club rooms, Moray Place, on Monday; when the president, Mr G. S. Currie, presided over 32 members and friends. The speaker for the evening was Mr Coombs, whose subject was “ Light.” Mr Coombs dealt very thoroughly with his subject, explainiig first the early theories which were held, and the accumulated evidence which proved that light must be in the form of a wave motion. He then dealt with reflection and refraction, explaining how the modern coated lens multiplied- the effect of reflection, and the methods that had been dtevised to overcome chromatic and' spherical aberration, which were two of the defects of early camera lenses. Spherical aberration is a defect caused by the spherical shape of the lens surface, resulting in distortion to the projected image, this being overcome by the use of combination lenses, while chromatic aberration is caused by the fact that the focal length of various colours is different for the one lens, this being overcome by the use of different, types of glass to build up the lens combination. The measuring of light, and operation of the photo-electric cell exposure meter, was dealt, with, and members asked numerous questions dealing with the subject.

Mr Currie, in moving a hearty vote of thanks to the speaker, ■ expressed the opinion that valuable knowledge has been gained by all present. During the evening the usual screening of four-minute films took place, those shown being ‘ Tunnel Beach ’ and a V.J.-Day film. These films were constructively criticised, and resulted in members gaining the advantage of others’ experience in filming difficult subjects. Dr J. L. Malcolm supplemented the tglk by a short treatise on the use of exposure meters.
