BAD BANANAS
SHIPMENT ON ORARI
Only a very small percentage of the bananas which arrived by the Orari will find their way into the fruiterers’ shops. A city auctioneer stated to-day that the bananas were almost a total loss, and were selling at 1s to £1 for a case of 801 b in the city markets. The majority went at 4s to 5s a case, instead of the * customary 255. The bananas came from Fiji, and the consignment comprised 2,300 cases for Dunedin and a further 1,000 cases destined for Southland. The loss to the Marketing Division is expected to be considerable. - The Orari arrived at Poi't Chalmers on Saturday afternoon, and the cargo was worked on Monday. It is not known how the fruit came to be shipped by a vessel which is apparently not equipped to handie a cargo of this type,' but the master certainly did everything possible during the voyage to save the fruit.
