NO WAR FOR YEARS
POWERS TOO OCCUPIED WITH DOMESTIC PROBLEMS PRESENT GENERATION WILL NOT TOLERATE ANOTHER CONFLICT (llec. 10 a.in.) NEW YORK, February 17. The United Nations Secretary-Gene-ral, M. Trygve Lie, in a speech at Minneapolis, said his personal observations and conversations with the leaders of the Great Powers convinced him that they were overwhelmingly
occupied with domestic problems of the most serious nature, and none had the slightest notion that they would be solved by a fresh conflict. “ The problems of reconstruction and reconversion are more than enough to occupy all their forces foif years,” he said. “ The present generation simply won’t tolerate another war. I take an optimistic view of both the short-range and long-range peace problems.”
He added: “We can excuse the Security Council’s trials and tribulations on the grounds that they occurred before any of the peace treaties were signed. You cannot maintain peace until you have a peace to maintain. To say that the Council has been a failure simply reveals ignorance of the fact that it has not yet really begun to work, and to say that it has been a success is to dismiss' the fact that most of its work remains to be tackled.”
