—Ministerial.— The Minister of Finance, the Right Hon. W. Nash, expects to leave Auckland at the week-end on the first stage of his trip to the World Trade Conference at Geneva. He will'make a connection with the United r States air service either at Fiji or Australia for' the United States, where he will spend a fortnight at a conference of the Economic and Security Council of the' United Nations in New York before proceeding to Geneva. He expects to be absent from New Zealand for eight weeks. :—Air Passengers.— Passengers from the north yesterday afternoon were:—Miss F. Black. Mr < and Mrs Brabant, Mr H. Hartnell,-Mr W. Hickson, : from Argentina, are at present visiting Dunedin. Mr Hickson is the manager of the Buenos Airesbranch of the New Zealand Insurance Company, which has been operating in, the Argentine for the last 60 years. • Mr H. Digby Smith, chairman of the Social Security Commission, will retire on March 1. He also held the post of secretary of Avar pensions for many years. He joined the Post Office about: 40 yearn ago, and later became Commissioner of Pensions.* When tho Social Security Department was formed he was appointed director, and later took his present post. . The Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary of the Soviet Union to New Zealand, M. Ziabkin, will pay an official visit to Dunedin ou March 10 and 11 in the course of a South Island tour. The Mayor (Mr ]>. C. Cameron) is. arranging a. programme for- the visit. Motions of sympathy with tho relatives of the late Mr John -Watson, the father of the present Mayor of Port Chalmers, and Mr A. M. Cassie, the son, of Cr Cassie, were passed at the meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council last night. .. On a short visit to Dunedin is Mr J. R. Skinner, who, as Naval Affairs Officer at New Zeajand House in London, was well-known to all former Navy men who visited London during the war. Mr Skinner is visiting New Zealand to confer .with the Naval Board concerning the ‘future of the New Zealand naval headquarters in London. During his stay Mr Skinner lias met many former associates and friends, and yesterday' afternoon a party of former Fleet Air Arm officers entertained him and Mrs Skinner. An informal reception was tendered him to-dav by the Mayor (Mr Cameron) and Mr P. G. Connolly, M.P. Mr Skinner will leave to-morrow for Christchurch, and will leave New Zealand by the Largs Bay.in-early March.
