AWARD BLUNDER
CHRISTMAS DAY HOLIDAY UNCLAIMED JUDGE REMINDS BOTH PARTIES “It is very refreshing to see that the butchers of Otago will be giving a service to the public on Christmas Day,” remarked Mr Justice Tyndall at the sitting of the Arbitration Court this morning, when a dispute involving the retail butchers in Otago was heard. Both the employers’ representative (Mr A. S. Cookson) and the representative of the union (Mr W. W. Batchelor) registered extreme Consternation at His Honour’s remark and it was suggested that the holiday had been omitted from the court’s copy of the recommendations through a typist’s error.
'His Honour: But I have a copy signed by you. It was explained that one mistake liad been corrected after it had been signed, hut apparently there had been another. His Honour: Do you allow people to correct your cheques after you have signed them? Mr A. S. CooksoiY (employers’ representative): If they correct them the right way, sir. His Honour thereupon stressed the need for a detailed checking of full copies of the 1 recommendations before the sitting of the court, for if he had not accidentally noticed the omission the holiday would not have been included in the award.
