COLLEGE CHAPEL
OFFER OF £30,000 MR GOODFELLOW'S GIFT TO UNIVERSITY (P.A.) AUCKLAND, February 17. An offer by Mr William Goodfellow, of Auckland, to provide £30,000 to establish a fund for the erection of an Auckland University College chapel was received at a meeting of the college council to-day. It was stated that the chapel would form part of a group of university buildings which the council proposes to erect at Tamaki West. The offer was conveyed in a letter from an Auckland legal firm. The letter stated that in making this generous contribution the donor sought to build up Christian faith and character as the foundation of sound citizenship, and to provide in the Auckland University College an opportunity for those students wishing to do so to engage in worship and fellowship as part of their college life and training. While the £30 ; 000 should cover the cost of the erection of the chapel, the letter continued, Mr Goodfellow appreciated that the fund would require to be augmented by a further £20,000 to provide by interest the chaplain’s stipend, and the cost of repairs and maintenance. Mr Goodfellow hoped to assist personally in providing this further sum, and others might desire to follow the lead given. The council decided to hold a special meeting to discuss the matter with the proposed board of management.
