Balelutha Amateur Swimming Club held its final carnival for this season on Saturday afternoon. The weather was somewhat . cold, with drizzling showers at intervals, and this no doubt had its effects on the attendance oi the public, whicli was small. Entries in moot of the events were excellent, and in some two or three heats had to be held. Interest was added by the unexpected arrival of competitors from Kiwi and Kaikorai Clubs, and, taken all round, the programme was quite an interesting one. Mr D. Lattimore was in charge, and he and his band of officials carried out the programme m good time. Some very good times were recorded, while in the junior diving the standard was high. An interesting demonstration on life-saving and resuscitation was given under the direction of Mr Lattimore by a local team, and was very instructive. At night a successful dance was held. Brinsley (Kiwi), 16 points, 2; S. Michie, 111 points, 3. Open Diving : Cliff Muir 1, M. Tweed 2. FIRE BRIGADE COMPETITIONS. The Balelutha Fire Brigade held its annual competitions on Saturday. Weather conditions were not the best, but despite tliis there was a fair attendance’ of spectators, who watched an interesting display. Good times were registered by the winners, and as a result the brigade should have a strong representation at the Watts Gup competitions at Lawrence next Saturday and at the Southern Districts demonstration at Mosgiel on March 8. Supt. G. Munro was in charge of the competitions, and lie was assisted by Messrs A. Wright (starter), J. McNoe (timekeeper), l. and A. Stewart (judges. The lion, members’ cup for the winner of the one-man event this year went to E. Muir, Mr A. Wright’s trophy for the fastest time from scratch iu the one-man event wa6 won by T. Muir (52sec), while Mr It. Chalmers’s trophy for aggregate points went to E. Muir with 65 points. Next in order were E. Morris and T.' Muir, each with 61 points. At night a very enjoyable smoke social was held, at which the prizes won during the afternoon were presented. TENNIS. A match between South O'tago and West Otago Sub-associations was played at Balclutha on Saturday under rather unfavourable weather conditions Several of the sets were played in a misty drizzle, play was interrupted several times by slightly heavier showers, and continued on damp courts with the inevitable effect on the’balls. In spite of all this, however, the match was finished by playing all sets up to nine games and cutting out the usual men’s three-set contests. South Otago proved the stronger team,- especially in the men’s section, and won the match by 18 sets (195 games) to 6 sets (124 games). Scores, South Otago names first:— Men’s Singles.—Broad v.
