MISS KERR’S ELIMINATION

ROBSON STILL IN MEN’S DOUBLES (Special.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 8. Otago’s hopes; of having a finalist in the women’s singles vanished yesterday when Miss Mavis Kerr was beaten, by Miss Evelyn Attwood (Auckland) in straight sets. 1 Aliss Kerr held the lead 3-1 in the first set and 4-3 in the second, but could not control her shots at crucial moments. The match produced several excellent driving rallies, but Miss Attwood maintained a better length and angled her shots to the corners, cutting off Aliss Kerr’s lofted returns from the net. J. E. Robson (Otago) and 0. Al. Bold (Hutt Valley) entered the semifinals of the men’s doubles, beating the Roach brothers (Waikato) in three straight sets. They were too forceful and too steady for their opponents. The play yesterday confirmed the previous forecasts that both R. S.

McKenzie and Miss M. Beverley should retain the singles titles. McKenzie played well within himself to beat a ciuo mate and former champion, N. V. Edwards, and for the first time in the tournament Miss Berverley’s powerful forehand was operating as an offensive weapon. In the final two sets- she practically blasted Mrs J. Graham, favoured by some critics to win, off the court with a barrage of hard-hit shots to the coiners. Otago and Southland still have hopes in the women’s doubles, for Mrs J. H. Adams and Miss Kerr are to meet Misses Beverley and B. Potter in the semi-finals.
