CANTERBURY MEETS AUCKLAND SOUTHERNERS BATTING (P.A.) AUCKLAND, January 8. The Plunket Shield cricket match between Canterbury and Auckland began at Eden Park this morning, Cromb. the Canterbury captain, winning the toss and electing to bat Canterbury’s opening pair was Cromb and the English professional, Parks, who faced Cowie’s bowling, Ids first over being a maiden. Cromb opened the scoring, rattling the pickets with a four off Snedden. Cowie continued the attack with good length bowling, although he was not so fast as usual. He was bowling to tlie off, but Cromb refused to be tempted, letting the balls go through to the wicketkeeper. Cromb had added a single and a three to his score, and Parks opened his account with a nice cut for 2 off Wills, then driving him to mid-on for a sharp single. After 15 minutes’ play Canterbury had 13 runs up, and in the next half-hour the pair added another 12, mostly singles. Parks had a partiality for slips shots and quiet singles on the off. At 10.50 a.m. each batsman had scored 13, with no extras.
The weather is fine, with a very slight breeze across the wicket, which is easy.
