TRADES COUNCIL SUPPORTS WATERSIDERS

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, January 7. The executive . of the Auckland Trades Council, at a special meeting to-day, unanimously decided to reaffirm its previous attitude to support the claims of the waterside workers A telegram was also sent to the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, urging him to call a meeting of the National Executive of the Waterside Workers’ Union with the object of settling the dispute. Before making its decision, the executive was given a full report by the national president of the Waterside Workers’ Union, Mr H. Barnes, on the dispute and the negotiations and discussions which had taken place jn- Wellington between the National Council and National Executive of the Federation of Labour and the National Executive of the Waterside Workers’ Union. It was stated that no reply had been received to a telegram sent about 10 days ago by the executive of the Trades Council to the National Executive of the Federation of Labour requesting an immediate meeting of the National Council to consider the dispute, i The Auckland Trades Council is a branch of the New Zealand Federation of Labour, which issued a statement on December 24 recommending the waterside workers to_ resume normal work and hand the dispute over immediately to the federation, with a view to bringing about a satisfactory settlement.
