WAR LOADING ON PETROL

NATIONAL LEADER PROMISES REMOVAL (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 4. “ If present trends continue, and i believe they certainly will, the National Party will reduce the petrol tax by removing the 4d a gallon war loading,” said the Leader of the National Partv, Mr Holland, when lie addressed electors at St. Andrews Hall this evening. This would give welcome taxation relief to all motorists, and would substantially lower production costs, Mr Holland added. Mr Holland said that ipetrol taxation was 14.7 d per gallon. Now that rationing had been lifted there was an increased demand, and consequently an increase in the amount paid by way of taxation into the coffers of the Government. “It will be' interesting to see what our friends of the other side have to say about this announcement,” Mr Holland commented. It was the intention of the National Party, if elected, to co-operate with local bodies by finding the necessary finance for suitable accommodation for young women and elderly people in the cities, Mr Holland said. A questioner had said that young women were rooming . under deplorable conditions in the cities. He asked would (Mr Holland be prepared to put forward a, proposal for building suitable flats for them. Mr Holland, replied that elderly people had also to be considered. Local bodies were best able to provide accommodation for .these people if they received. Government assistance.
