THE SOFT PEDAL
(Written by “ T.M.C.,” for the ‘ Evening Star.’) All Parliaments must close Soon or late, And former friends and foes Celebrate, In phrases studiously polite, The interval before the fight. Says Peter: “ Now this scene Makes me sad. The Opposition’s been Not so bad; And they and we —come wind, come weather— Have always tried to work together. “ It afflicts me with some small Twinge of pain To think we shall not all Meet again; For some of us, I hope—or fea' Undoubtedly will not be here.” These gentle courtesies Give the cue To Sidney, who replies: “ Same to you. As friends we part, as friends we’ll meet. (Aside) Shall I look well in Peter’s seat? ” It’s nice for friend and foe Thus to mix; - But in a week or so Politics Will turn these friendly Democrats To something like Kilkenny cats.
