TRIALS FOR ASHBURTON GRIGG STAKES CANDIDATES (Special.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 10. 1 A strong north-westerly wind which came up shortly after training operations commenced at Riccarton tended towards fast times, especially over the last half-mile or three furlongs. The trial grass was open, and the galloping was divided between this and the plough, which also provided fast going. A feature of the work was the good showings of fancied candidates for the John Grigg Stakes next Saturday, including Palm Bearer, llahine, Hart Royal, and Privilege. On the grass Swingalong and Indian Dawn were given strong work over six furlongs in I:2] 2-5. Montello d’Oro and Foxspear kept abreast clear of Big Top in a smart bout over four hurdles, both giving encouraging displays. Big Top chanced his first two fences, but improved over the second two. Blue Trout will not be taken to the Dunedin meeting, as earlier expected, and will make her reappearance at the Wellington Club’s meeting at Awapuni next month. Her trainer, F. Roberts, also intends to take Irish Note, Thornbridge, Sanskrit, Kartikeva, and Lincoln Fair to Awapuni. Kartikeya is the first of the progeny of Finis to race, and showed promise by leading his division home in the juvenile parade at Riccarton last month.. Lincoln Fair is an English-bred filly imported by Mr E. E. Steel, of Oamaru, and is to be given some racing before being put to the stud.
