AMAZING POSSIBILITIES
EXTENSION OF RADAR TO RADIO MULTIPLE TRANSMISSION OF PROGRAMMES NEW YORK, September 9. The International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation demonstrated a new radio transmission system by which many programmes are simultaneously broadcast from one station, tlie listeners selecting the one which is wanted simply by pressing an appropriate button. The system, which is similar to radar, is known as pulse time modulation or multiplex, and it reuires a new type of receiving set with parabolic antennae. During the demonstration eight programmes were broadcast, including a facsimile of newspaper reproduction and a “ ticker ” service, as well as music. The demonstrator said that as many as 100 programmes could be broadcast by using wider bands and more extensive multiplexing _ equipment. It was not over-futuristic to hope that it might be possible some day for. anyone anywhere to talk directly to anyone else anywhere.
