NORTH OTAGO DECISION
WON'T TRAVEL IF SHIELD HOT AT STAKE (P.A.) OAMARU, September 10. Unless the North Otago-Southland match, scheduled for September 28, is recognised by the New Zealand Rugby Union as a Raufurly Shield fixture, the North Otago team will not make the trip to Invercargill. This decision was reached by the Management Committee of the North ..Otago Rugby Union last evening. The president (Mr J. Macmillan) said the New Zealand Rugby Union should have advised the unions concerned of the rule governing notification of shield challenges, as it was several years since Ranfurl.y Shield matches had been played. A report from Wellington had mentioned “ repercussions,” and to avoid any trouble the speaker thought that North Otago should obtain a definite ruling from the New Zealand Union. Mr D. S. Loder expressed the view that if North Otago could not play for the Raufurly Shield it was not worth while putting the representative side into hard training. The committee then made the above decision.
