AMERICAN TRUCK DRIVERS’ STRIKE ACUTE FOOD SHORTAGE DEVELOPING NEW YORK, .September 9. Many thousands of workers will be ■laid off this week as the result of an intensification of the truck drivers’ strike An acute food shortage is developing. A large sugar refinery, which normally processes 4,000,0001 b of sugar a day, has announced that its operations have been suspended because deliveries cannot be made. The (Bakers’ Association says that most bakeries have sugar for only one week, and operations must be suspended when supplies are exhausted. Cordial factories are also closing. The managements of thousands of chain food stores say their shelves are almost bare, and that they are closing to-morrow.
