OBITUARY

PROFESSOR GOULD (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 20. The death has occurred of Professor W. H. Gould, aged 89, well-known for his long association with Victoria University College as professor of education. Professor Gould was born in London and came to New Zealand at an early' age, entering the teaching profession with the M.A. degree and first-class honours in economics. He had wide educational experience. He commenced as a pupil teacher at A ss weekly and 17 years later became first assistant at Te Aro School., Later he accepted from the Tongan Government the dual position of Director of Education in the Kingdom of Tonga, and principal of the Tongan Boys' College. He returned to New Zealand with his wife »nd three children on the outbreak of the 1914 war. He held a clerical position in the defence Department for a few months, but became convinced he could render better service in his own profession. He held positions' in several Wellington schools, then as an inspector, and in 1923 vice-principal of the Teachers' Training College at Kelburn, and assistant lecturer oa education at the Victoria University. In 1928 he was appointed professor of education at Victoria, where he remained, with the exception of some months' study abroad, until his retirement early this vear.

He is survived by his wife, four sons. Jack and Richard (Wellington), William (Christchurch), and George (Picton), and a daughter, Mrs Trididger (of Auckland). ,
