ELECTRON BEAM
MAY AID FIGHT AGAINST GANGER SCOURGE 20 MILLION VOLT WEAPON (Rec. 11.10 a.m.) V NEW YORK, July 19. A 20,000,000-volt free electron beam, described by scientists as a new tool which atomic and medical scientists have long waited, has been produced at the University of Illinois. The beam opens entirely new ways to the study of the inside of the atom, and also the behaviour of electrons; and .could be used to create artificially radio-active substances and attack deep-seated cancer. Doctors say that theoretical calculations indicate that the beam might disclose important advantages over X-rays in the treatment of cancer, but from three to five years' future study might be necessary before such a powerful force could be turned on a human being.
