HAPPY HOURS IN IDEAL SURROUNDINGS GIRLS TO DO BOOKBINDING • Completely removed from the monotony of routine processes or the disconcerting turmoil attendant on high pressure output by machine operatives is the congenial and interesting occupation (for young ladies of bookbinding. Add to the pleasures and advantages arising from the nature of this work the attractiveness of the surroundings in which it is prepared, and one obtains an idea of what the Evening Star Company has to offer in its Bookbinding Department. Happy employment in a model workroom situated " well above the worry level" of Stuart street, is at present available for several girls. The workroom, centrally heated, is as well equipped as the rest of the modern ' Star ' building, with windows on all sides, and skylights permitting the entry of the maximum amount of sun, while a radio gives : " music while you work." There is a dining room and a lounge, and the staff is given breaks for morning and afternoon tea. Several varieties o!f work are open for both experienced and inexperienced girls, from the task of the book sewer working with needle and thread on book sections to part-time work on the envelope-making machines. Girls leaving 6chool start at £l_ 7s 6d a week at the age of 15, working up to a wage of £3 10s 9d after four years. The work is easy, and some of the employees have been on the job for more than 20 years. At the moment there is much to be done binding bank ledgers, and later on the staff will be engaged on thousands of copies of Wise's New Zealand Directory. Girls looking for congenial work could hardly make a better choice. It will be like leaving home to go home. Those who wish to avail themselves of these ideal conditions should apply to the Manufacturing Department offiqe, just inside the Stuart street entrance to the ' Star ' building.
