INFANT BOARDS TRAIN

UNSCHEDULED RIDE ON SOUTH EXPRESS Straying from his mother while she was in the parcels office at the Timaru railway station on Tuesday, a boy three and a-half years old boarded the south express. The mother informed the station master and the police, and trains going both ways were searched. His mother intended going to Rangitata, and she thought he may have entrained on the goods going north. It was searched at Washdyke, without avail. Word was then sent to Studholme. and the boy was located on the south-bound express and returned to Timaru by the next train.

When reporting the matter to the station master (Mr C. W. S. White), the mother announced that she had been in the habit of leaving the boy a the railway station while she did her shopping. He was interested in trains. Parents could not be too careful of their children when on the station, said the station master. An inspection was made before a recent shunting operation and a child was found between two trucks.
