FORMER AMERICAN AMBASSADOR LONDON, April 23. . "We cannot get peace while one section of the races of the world profits on the poverty of another," said Mr Beviu in a speech at the Government farewell to Mr J. G. Winant on the eve of his retirement from the American Ambassadorship. He added: " 1 see millions of people whose standards of life are below normal but whose hearts are longing as our hearts are for a better life. 1 ' In a final tribute to Mr Winant, Mr Bevin said: "You are a member of a great country, a country which we shall never fight, and you will never fight us, but we will work in happy combination, with malice towards none and charity towards all." The general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, Sir Walter Citrine, presenting Sir Winant with the gold badge of the congress, said: " This is no mere formality. No Ambassador has ever previously received: this distinction. We know you are a straight guy-" ;
